After ten years, MTV has finally decided to pull the plug on their music video countdown show “Total Request Live.” At TRL’s height, it was a major culture hub, propelling Carson Daly to fame, and spawning copycat shows on BET and CMT. Hilarie Burton, better known as Peyton on One Tree Hill, briefly VJ’d as well.
In recent years, TRL was pretty much the worst way to watch videos, with 78% of the screen covered at any time with stupid graphics and video boxes with 12 year old girls screaming how they “Love Lil Wayne ohmigawd!”
I’m sad to see the last refuge of actual music on MTV go away, but in a way they are putting it out of it’s misery.
I don’t know what MTV is replacing it with, but if their recent programming choices are any indicator, it will be a reality show where cast members of “The Hills” battle “Newport Harbor” cast members on an island.
