October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and One Tree Hill and Gilmore Girls producer Jessica Queller is celebrating the month with the release of her new book, Pretty Is What Changes: Impossible Choices, the Breast Cancer Gene, and How I Defied My Destiny.

Now the head writer for CW’s Gossip Girl, Queller documents her personal decision to undergo a full mastectomy after testing positive for BRCA-1 mutation (the gene linked to breast and ovarian cancer), despite not having breast cancer . It’s a controversial method in surviving cancer by stopping it before it even starts.
